Margaret Dabbs was within the business of feet for the reason that mid-nineties, getting some extent in podiatry before opening her first foot-focused clinic in 1998. Since then, Dabbs has opened a slew of different clinics together with a flagship spa, which, besides tending to toes, also has a nail spa and a menu of holistic beauty treatments. She’s also launched her personal line of goods for the feet (now you can find them at Space NK within the States, www.spacenk.com ). Here, Dabbs offers her top tips for coping with summertime foot woes.
Broaden Your Shoe Wardrobe
“Wedge heels may have very inflexible heels, so attempt to wear those who are lighter-weight and make allowance some cushioning and shock absorbance as you walk. Very high heels can wreck havoc at the feet if worn for prolonged periods of time; they’ll put pressure at the toe joints and the ball of the foot in addition to sometimes cause corn and callus buildup. Mules or flip-flop style shoes don’t offer support to the arch. The secret to avoiding these issues is to rotate shoe styles and heel heights; don’t wear an analogous shoes day-to-day. And remember, pain is the most important indicator: If a shoe hurts, don’t wear it.”
Don’t Sweat It
“Excessive sweating could be uncomfortable, but it is a natural body function. And it’s actually quite a superb thing because it helps to hydrate the feet. It only becomes an argument if bacteria builds up, as this may end in foot odor. Simple rules are to maintain the feet clean and dry-ensure that feet are washed and punctiliously dried, especially between the toes. Wear socks or tights as these will take in excessive sweat and may keep the shoes themselves dry. And provides the feet some fresh air while you can by walking around at home in bare feet.”
Exfoliate Frequently
“The primary issues we see in our clinics throughout the summer are dry, dehydrated skin and nails, cracked and calloused skin round the heel areas, and calluses over the burden-bearing areas of the feet just like the big toe. In the summertime we have a tendency to wear flip-flops, and while these allow air for the feet, the constant slapping at the heel against an unsupported open back can promote hard skin. To combat this, exfoliate weekly with a product like our Exfoliating Foot Mousse; it has the high-performance ingredient emu oil, that is antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory, and has superb healing properties.”
File Dry
“Using foot files on dry skin simply gives the proper results and is longer-lasting. Wet skin becomes soft when soaked in water and more susceptible to tearing and therefore potential infection. Also, the water masks the areas of hard and calloused skin, making it harder to take away.”
Speaking of Calluses…
“Hard masses at the big toe are normally thanks to friction of footwear rubbing the outside and the surface cells becoming compounded. Shoes which might be tight or narrow may cause pressure at the toe area. Additionally, your gait can affect where callused and tough skin builds up at the feet. When the calluses building up, it could be painful at pressure-point areas. Generally, anything that causes pain to the feet means it’s time to see a qualified. Callus buildup is the skin’s way of offering protection to areas where there’s friction. However, if it gets to some extent where the callus becomes overthickened and pushes into softer tissues, it could be painful and unpleasant. Visit a podiatrist who will ensure the callus is effectively removed.”
No Overnight Sock Treatments
“There is nothing more relaxing than soaking the feet in warm water with either a foot-specific product or simply salt to supply relief for aches and pains. i do not recommend any products that advise sleeping in socks, though. Socks are tight to the feet and may therefore restrict circulation. By putting socks over a product you’re creating an atmosphere for bacteria-warm and damp-and sweat will simply building up, leaving feet soggy, not fresh.”
All Lotions Aren’t Created Equal
“Body lotion simply isn’t designed for the thicker skin at the feet, so it won’t be as effective. Search for foot-specific products; these have ingredients (just like the emu oil in our products) that absorb into the surface so it’s effectively rehydrated, in place of simply sitting at the skin surface and leaving a movie.”
Break In Before You Go Out
“Generally, leather shoes will give slightly and mould to the feet with wear, but now matter what, in case you have new shoes, the perfect thing is to wear them indoors for multiple days. If shoes rub slightly round the heel, run a skinny layer of petroleum jelly along the interior to stop the friction of the shoe against the hosiery and skin.”
Take a Polish Break
“Polishes can dehydrate the nail and cuticle areas, making them more liable to cracking and splitting. This not just looks unattractive, however the damage can take the time to lay right since toenails take some time to grow back. Prolonged use of dark polish may also cause staining; it helps in case you use solvent- and chemical-free lacquer, that is kinder to nails. Most significantly, be sure to give nails a break from polish on occasion; a simply groomed and buffed nail can look fantastic.”
